Arya’s newborn session

posted in BabyPhotoshoots

When I found out that I was pregnant, right away I knew that I wanted to do a  newborn photo session with my little one. They are the most precious pictures you can have, the first weeks of life and I wanted to capture that moment. My friend Connie Granja specializes in newborn photography and I had to book a session with her. She did such an amazing job with the photos!

Being in Florida in the middle of summer is no joke with this heat. Seriously sweating like a whore in church that day. My hair was starting frizz and I could just feel the humidity slowly turning my just flat ironed mane into a big fuzz ball. Connie also had to keep it nice and toasty (there was a heater involved) for Arya since she was barely clothed during the photoshoot and she needed to stay asleep for it also. Nevertheless we made it through the shoot:)

Here are some of the outtakes from the shoot. Connie did a fantastic job! Hope you enjoy the pictures 🙂

No sleep for mommy!

posted in Baby

I’m sure every mother has faced this issue of baby sleeping during the day and bright eyed at night. For the past several nights I have been falling asleep on the couch at around 4:30 with Arya falling asleep next to me on the chaise – I assure you she is safe and won’t be falling off.

She starts her cry fits at around 11:30 which is the time Andrew goes to bed and has to wake up early. So being the nice wife I decided to start taking her out of the bedroom and downstairs to the living room where he won’t be disturbed by the screams of bloody murder, I mean this girl is hitting an octave I didn’t know existed.

Of course she is sleeping during the day and has all this energy at night. Everyone says keep her awake during the day, sure that’s easier said than done. This baby sleeps through diaper changes, she will wake up for about 5-10 mins and then off to lala land again. I really need her to get on my schedule since I’ll be back at work soon. I don’t know what else to do. I even tried the swing she just screams the whole time she is in there. Mind you when she would go in there during the day she would fall asleep but at night time that’s not the case.

I really don’t want to to think that I have a colicky baby but sometimes it seems like I do. I have even given her gripe water, 3 different brands so far nothing is working! Also tried gas drops and that doesn’t seem to be doing diddly squat. What kills me is some nights usually the weekend she sleeps….go figure. Is there any other remedy out there to try? This tired momma wants needs some serious sleep.

Life as a new mom

posted in Baby

Wow 1 month flew by so quickly, can’t believe that Arya is 5 weeks old today. I’m not going to lie and sugar coat anything the past month has been rough! Started out getting about 2-4 hours of sleep a day, it seems as though she has colic, breastfeeding on demand…. it’s been a bit hectic around here.

Of course I am on her schedule now so she wakes up at about 3am so I can nurse her, that lasts for about 30 mins, then she is up again at about 6 or 7 for the next feeding. At about 9 or 10 she is ready to wake up. It was really rough for Andrew when he went back to work because she was up crying in the middle of the night and he is a light sleeper.  At one point I was taking her to the other room every time she would make a sound and I would end up falling asleep in the other room with her in my arms – not the most comfortable way to sleep because I would fall asleep in the rocking chair. I am always aware that she is in my arms so I am doing this on alert type of sleep, where I was waking up every 30 mins to make sure she was okay.

As the weeks passed, I did learn that she is a baby that doesn’t want to be alone. As soon as I would put her in her crib she would be wide awake and crying again, even though she was asleep in my arms just a few seconds before. So I decided to combat this by having her fall asleep on my chest and I let her stay there for a good 40 mins to an hour and then I would transition her to the bassinet. That seems to be working so far and Andrew is able to sleep through the night.

Life as a mom is very challenging and also satisfying at the same time. When she is calm I look at her and think that’s my baby girl and I love her so much even though she can drive me nuts during the day.

My birth story

posted in Pregnancy

I have finally found the time to make a post of my delivery, these past few weeks have been very hectic.

I had my regular OB checkup on Wednesday July 13, I was 39 weeks pregnant, the OB suggests that I go into labor the following day! I had a 2 vesel umbilical cord – normal cords have 3 vesels. She said they would induce me and to go to the hospital the following day. This is when reality hit and the nerves started to set in, I’m giving birth a week earlier than expected!

We arrived at the hospital at 6AM, got checked in and then taken to the maternity ward. We got settled in, they hooked me up to the IV and started giving me Pitocin to induce me. During this time I was so nervous my blood pressure was not what it was supposed to be. The nurse asked me if I was nervous, I told her yes that I have never actually been in a hospital before, she told me to relax. Easy for her to say, but I did my best to relax even though I had needles prodding me, this blood pressure cuff inflating what felt like every 30 minutes, the constant beeping monitoring the baby’s hear rate…..So I tried my best to stay calm.

I think it was around 3pm I decided whatever pain I was feeling, I no longer wanted to feel and asked for the epidural. While they were giving me the epidural I was having contractions and had to try my hardest to stay calm and stay still. After getting the epidural I finally started to feel the numbness in my legs, and the pain finally started to subside.

Fast forward to around 4:30pm, the left side of my body was not feeling so numb anymore, the nurse told me to press the button to get another dose of the epidural, after about 20 minutes I started thinking is there anything left in that thing because this pain has not gotten any better. At 5:00 it’s getting to the point where I can’t grin and bear  the pain anymore, then the nurse gives me the worst news I could possibly hear at that moment. “You’re fully dilated and we can’t give you anymore doses of the epidural”. Are you effing kidding me?! I grabbed onto Andrew’s hand and squeezed as hard as I ever have. My mom was also in the room and I grabbed onto her hand as well. It seriously felt like this baby was coming, the weight on my pelvis felt like a 4 ton piece of steel. I was actually falling asleep and then waking up from the pain.

Finally my OB gets in the room and tells me it’s time to start pushing. My whole plan was to not have a natural birth and be drugged up to not feel any pain, but the total opposite happened. I pushed about 5 or 6 times, my husband tells me “she is crowning”…… there’s hope! This will be over soon, I push again and see this baby get pulled from out and that pain I was feeling was no longer there. I couldn’t have been happier, my baby is here and the pain is finally gone!

Arya Starley Tomchik, arrived at 5:33 on July 14th

38 weeks

38 weeks today and it seriously feels like it’s taking forever, when I was told the last few weeks were the hardest that was seriously no joke. We were supposed to be moving by the end of July which was after the little one gets here. But we decided that would be a bit hectic and now we are trying to move to a new place by the beginning of July. I am super excited about because I finally get to setup her nursery and finally an excuse to go to IKEA!

We are pretty stocked up with the things we need, have a good amount of cloth diapers but I am ordering more for her every other week. So far the brands that I have gotten are Grovia, Kangacare, Lalabye Baby, Bum Genius (pocket diapers) Thirsties covers and Grovia pre-folds. After prepping the inserts, the brand that I am not super thrilled about is bum genius, the quality just feels very cheap compared to the others but we will see how well they hold up when she’s in them.

Baby Shower

My best friends threw me a shower on May 7th, and I had such a blast. It was so nice to see them both, haven’t seen them since the wedding. The venue was at my parents house, my mom has been pruning that backyard for this event and everything turned out beautiful! I was so happy, got showered with love and gifts.

The games were my favorite part honestly, my besties Karla and Nerisse did such an amazing job planning this shower and coordinating with my mom to get it perfect. My favorite game was watching these troopers drop the ping pong ball in the glass container with a balloon bump 😀

So happy everyone was able to make it, my best friends had to fly into town for this event.

Cannot wait for little one to get here, 2 more months to go!!!

Here are a few more images from the shower.
